Using the Library

Finding material in the Library

Most books and journals are kept on open shelves which means that you can go and collect the items that you would like to see yourself. This also means that you can browse the shelves to see other related material.

The Library is mainly arranged by region, but there are separate sections for Law, Art and Archaeology and the Social Sciences and some types of material, such as journals, are shelved in separate areas.

The best place to start your Library search is on the Library catalogue. Using the catalogue you can check to see if SOAS holds particular items which you may have the details of or you can see what information the Library holds on a particular subject.

Once you have found items you would like to consult write down the "classmark" for each one and in which floor/level are they locate at.

If you are unsure about how to find anything in the Library please contact the library where staff will be pleased to help you.
